Definition Of Topic Sentence
Before we discuss about the topic
sentence. Let’s we flash back to last material about Thesis statement which is
usually we found in introduction paragraph in essay. As we know, thesis
statement expresses the central idea of our essay. (Alice, 2006:17) The thesis
statement is very important because it gives the topic and controlling idea
(sub topic) of entire essay.
This thesis is instead of Topic and
Sub-topic, which is really important to determine what the contents of the essay,
it means the topic and sub-topic in thesis statement are decisive factor to
make certain about the topic sentence that we are going to discuss in the body
of essay. So thesis statement will determine the body of the paragraph
especially the main idea in each paragraph.
Ø Topic Sentence
A topic sentence states
the main point of a paragraph. Topic sentence is a sentence that
captures the meaning or it briefly indicates what is going to discuss in each
paragraph in the body of essay. It tells what the passage is mainly about. For
this reason, the topic sentence is a helpful guide to both of writer and the
reader. For writer, she/he can see what information to include and what
information to exclude. While, for the readers can see what the paragraph is
going to be about. An
effective topic sentence helps readers guess your main idea quickly. The topic
sentences include in all paragraph which form the body of the essay.
The topic
sentence states the main point
of the paragraph, and all of the other sentences should support, develop, and
explain that point. Because the topic sentence have plays an important role in
the paragraph.
There are 4 important
points to remember about topic sentence:

A topic sentence
is a complete sentence; it contains a Subject, a verb and usually a complement.

A topic sentence
contains of Topic and Controlling Idea. The controlling idea limits the topic
to a specific area to be discussed in the space of single paragraph.
3.
A topic sentence
is the simple sentences but give a strong and clear idea in the paragraph.
4.
A topic sentence
is the most general statement in the paragraph because it gives only the main
idea.

A topic sentence
has two essential parts: the topic and the controlling idea. The topic names
the subject or main idea in the paragraph. The controlling idea makes a
specific comment about the topic, which indicates what the rest of the
paragraph will say about the topic. It limits or controls the topic to specific
aspect of the topic to be discusses.

be in the first or in the last sentence in a paragraph.
But, It is normally appears as the first sentence in each paragraph.

developing major point suggested in the controlling idea (sub topic) of the

effective topic sentence we should follows this features:

include too many unrelated ideas in the topic sentences.
